First Look: Tyke Toter

We were stoked to see this in the mailbox yesterday! I first found out about the Tyke Toter while researching a similar style of seat  that was having production delays.  We outlined these new front mounted style of seats in a previous post but we had not yet tried any of them…until today.

The Tyke Toter arrived and we quickly fastened it to my townie bike for a test around the neighbourhood.  Both my 2 year old and 5 year old hopped on for a ride and laughing could be heard all the way to the end of the street.  Mom soon joined and we were racing with one on the ibert and another on the Tyke Toter.

Installation

The seat is very intuitive to assemble as it is a steel clamp with a quick release that attaches to your bike’s seat post.  A foot rest is then fastened to the down-tube with velcro and some rubber shims.  It took no time at all really, maybe 3 minutes.

The Ride

Surprisingly, the 2 year old took to the seat instantly.  Intuitively, he gripped the seats small handlebar and used his feet to stabilize himself during the ride.  I felt confident as well as the kids fit snugly between my arms and I was able to further cradle them with my knees if I felt like they were squirming around too much.  I am looking forward to mounting the seat to my full suspension mountain bike as the low stand-over coupled with suspension will make the ride so comfortable for me and kiddo.  Now, the instructions clearly state the seat is not intended for off-road use but I think a little bit of smooth single track will be in order!  At $99.99, the Tyke Toter seems to be a great value and great fun.  Further in depth review to come- time to hit that single track! UPDATE: PLEASE USE A DIY VELCRO STRAP TO SECURE FEET TO FOOTREST AS INJURY CAN OCCUR IF FEET SLIP IN TO FRONT WHEEL.
